AHS 13 Returning Characters Explained — Who's Back From Coven, Murder House and Apocalypse
American Horror Story: 13 brings back Cordelia Goode, Constance Langdon, Marie Laveau, Fiona Goode and more. Here's every confirmed returning character, who plays them, and why each return matters.

Spoiler warning: this article discusses how several characters’ stories ended in Coven, Murder House and Apocalypse.
Correction and update (September 26, 2026): An earlier version misstated Fiona’s death, Madison’s fate in Coven, Queenie’s later death and Coco’s Apocalypse status. Those character histories have been corrected below. The cast information also reflects Disney’s later identification of Ben DeSoto and Addie Langdon.
American Horror Story: 13 premiered September 24 in the US and September 25 in the UK. Its promotion brought back characters from across the anthology’s earlier seasons, with some actors playing multiple roles. FX’s initial press materials named seven returning characters, and later promotion identified more. This guide distinguishes named confirmations from trailer appearances and explains the characters’ earlier stories; it does not treat the first episodes as evidence for events it has not examined.

The Coven Characters — Where This Season’s Center of Gravity Is
Coven supplies the largest single block of confirmed returns, which tracks with our watch guide already treating it as the essential pre-13 watch.
Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson) was Coven’s headmistress and, by the season’s end, its reigning Supreme — the most powerful witch of her generation. That’s exactly where her story left off: Supreme, in charge of Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Her return is the least mysterious of the bunch on paper, since nothing in Coven or Apocalypse removed her from that position.
Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) is a different case. Fiona was the reigning Supreme before her daughter Cordelia succeeded her. The Axeman appears to kill Fiona, but the Coven finale reveals that they staged her death. Fiona actually dies in Cordelia’s arms. Her appearance in 13 cannot be explained from the trailer alone.
Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) did not survive the Coven finale: Kyle strangles her after she refuses to revive Zoe. In Apocalypse, Michael Langdon brings her back from Hell. Those are separate events, and the later season’s time reset makes any simple claim about her final state unreliable.
Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) was Voodoo Queen of New Orleans and Cordelia’s coven’s historic rival throughout Coven, immortal through a deal with Papa Legba. That deal was eventually broken near the end of the season — Marie’s immortality was revoked and she was killed. Her appearance in 13 cannot be explained from the trailer alone.
Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) survives Coven, but is killed at the Hotel Cortez in Hotel. Apocalypse first brings her back and later changes the timeline: Mallory warns her away from the hotel. Her history cannot be reduced to an uninterrupted survival.
Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) is worth a specific caveat: she’s visible in FX’s September trailer, which is a meaningfully stronger basis than a guess, but FX and Disney’s own press materials haven’t officially named her character yet. Treat this one as very likely, not locked. In Coven, Delphine — a historical New Orleans socialite and serial killer of enslaved people — was cursed with immortality by Marie Laveau as punishment, then killed once that immortality was revoked near the season’s end. If confirmed, her return shares the same “how, exactly” question as Fiona’s and Marie’s.
The Murder House Characters
Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) is alive at the end of Murder House. Apocalypse later revisits her story and changes its timeline; this article does not assume which branch 13 follows.
Addie Langdon (Jamie Brewer) is Constance’s daughter in Murder House. Disney’s later season preview names Brewer’s return as Addie; it does not confirm any other role for her.
Rubber Man, revealed in Murder House to be Tate Langdon (Evan Peters), is more complicated. Tate is already dead for the entirety of Murder House: he is a ghost bound to the house, and Apocalypse shows him there again. The trailer does not establish where or how 13 uses him, so it cannot settle the limits of that haunting.
The Apocalypse Character
Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt (Leslie Grossman) is an Apocalypse original, introduced as a socialite before the season reveals that she is a witch under an identity spell. She dies and is revived during that season’s original sequence of events; the finale then resets the timeline. Her later status needs that qualification.
Confirmed Returns From Other Seasons
A handful of confirmed characters come from installments outside Coven, Murder House and Apocalypse — worth knowing about even though they’re outside this article’s main focus:
- Sister Jude (Jessica Lange), from Asylum — one of Lange’s four identified returning roles this season.
- Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange), from Freak Show — another of those four identified returning roles.
- Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch) and Paul the Illustrated Seal (Mat Fraser), both from Freak Show.
- Kai Anderson (Evan Peters) and Winter Anderson (Billie Lourd), both from Cult.
- James Patrick March (Evan Peters), from Hotel — the trailer’s most newsworthy addition, since he delivers the trailer’s key line, “It’s witch-hunting season.”
The trailer identifies four returning Lange characters and three for Peters. Lange said in a September 22 Good Morning America interview that she also plays a fifth mystery character, but did not reveal who it is. That additional role is not yet another confirmed returning character.
Confirmed Cast Versus Unconfirmed Roles
Several cast members were announced before their roles were identified. Disney’s later preview resolves some of those questions; others remain open:
- Frances Conroy is confirmed in the cast; her specific character has not been named.
- Mena Suvari is confirmed in the cast, but a return as Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) remains unconfirmed here. Suvari played Short in Murder House, not Hotel.
- Jamie Brewer is identified by Disney as Addie Langdon. Any additional role is unconfirmed.
- Joey Pollari plays Ben DeSoto, the new hospice worker identified in Disney’s official season preview.

The Bottom Line
The confirmed returns span several installments. The characters’ earlier deaths and Apocalypse’s revised timeline make the continuity more complicated than a cast list suggests. Promotional appearances alone do not establish how 13 handles each character.
