Metal Gear Solid 4 Is Finally Free From the PS3 After 18 Years
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 brings Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to PS5, Xbox, Steam and Switch, ending 18 years of PS3 exclusivity.

For 18 years, if you wanted to play Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots the way Konami intended, you needed a PlayStation 3 sitting under your TV. Not a PS3 emulator, not a cloud stream, not a re-release tucked into a compilation — an actual PS3, plugged in and working, in the year 2026. That changes with Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, which launched August 27 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The headline isn’t really the collection itself. It’s that Old Snake’s final mission is no longer stuck on one console generation.
Konami’s own announcement frames it that way, describing MGS4 as receiving its first port since its original 2008 release and calling this its debut on modern hardware. That’s a fairly blunt admission from the publisher: for nearly two decades, one of the most acclaimed entries in the series was also one of the hardest to legally access once PS3 hardware started dying off or simply falling out of homes.
MGS4 has been stuck on PS3 since 2008
Guns of the Patriots released in June 2008 as a PS3 exclusive, closing out Solid Snake’s story against the backdrop of the Patriots’ AI war system. Every other mainline entry in the series eventually found its way onto multiple platforms through re-releases, HD collections or remakes. MGS4 didn’t. It sat on PS3 while the rest of the franchise moved on, which meant that revisiting Old Snake’s ending — or playing it for the first time — required hardware that Sony stopped manufacturing back in 2017.
There’s a longer, more technical story about why the game proved so resistant to porting, tied to how tightly it was built around the PS3’s specific hardware. That’s worth its own deep dive down the line. For now, what matters is the outcome: Konami has finally done the work to bring it forward.
What’s included in Master Collection Vol. 2
The collection pairs Guns of the Patriots with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in its HD Collection form, and throws in the Game Boy Color title Metal Gear: Ghost Babel as bonus content rather than a third headline entry. It’s a smaller lineup than last year’s Master Collection Vol. 1, which covered the original PS1-through-MGS3 run, but the two main games here are doing more historically significant work.

Beyond the games themselves, Konami packed in the kind of archival material that’s become standard for these collections: screenplay and master books for both titles, a dedicated MGS4 database, and a second volume of digital soundtrack material. Peace Walker also carries over its online multiplayer support, though that’s a secondary detail next to the two games finally sitting side by side on current hardware.
MGS4 can also be bought separately
Not everyone wants the full bundle, and Konami has accounted for that. Both Guns of the Patriots and the Peace Walker HD Collection version are available as standalone digital purchases alongside the packaged Vol. 2 release. If Old Snake’s ending is the only piece of unfinished business on your list, you don’t have to pay for Ghost Babel and Peace Walker just to get there.
Why this matters for Metal Gear preservation
Game preservation conversations tend to focus on titles that are hard to find at all — delisted games, dead servers, discontinued hardware. MGS4 was a different kind of problem: a game that never disappeared, but that stayed functionally locked to a single console for its entire existence outside that one platform. Every other mainline Metal Gear Solid game had already been freed from its original hardware in some form. MGS4 was the holdout.
Master Collection Vol. 2 closes that gap. It doesn’t rewrite the game or reinvent how the story lands, and Konami isn’t billing it as a remaster — this is the existing game made available where people can actually reach it, across five platforms at once. For a franchise defined by long waits and false starts, that’s a meaningful correction on its own.
