Muramasa: Revenant Blades Launches February 4 — What the Modern Version Actually Adds
Muramasa: Revenant Blades combines Muramasa: The Demon Blade and its Genroku Legends DLC into one definitive edition, launching February 4, 2027 on PS5, Switch 2, Switch and PC. Here's exactly what's new compared to the Wii and Vita originals.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades launches February 4, 2027 on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Developer Vanillaware and publisher Marvelous are positioning it as the definitive way to play the 2D action-RPG: it combines the 2009 Wii original, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, with its PS Vita-era Genroku Legends expansion into a single package, rebuilt for current hardware.

What’s actually different from the Wii and Vita versions
Muramasa: The Demon Blade released on Wii in 2009 with two playable characters, Kisuke and Momohime. The PS Vita follow-up, Muramasa: Rebirth, added the Genroku Legends DLC campaign with additional protagonists. Revenant Blades is Vanillaware and Marvelous’s own framing of what this release is: those two eras “combined and further refined into a single, complete experience,” with six protagonists playable from the start rather than split across a base game and paid DLC.
The studio also confirms visual and mechanical updates on top of that consolidation — Vanillaware’s 2D character art has been “revitalized in gorgeous high-definition” and upgraded to support 4K resolution on modern platforms, and the game ships with updated controls, including parrying and deflection options that weren’t part of the original combat design.
Combat and the skill system
Combat centers on the same real-time sword-swapping system the series is known for, now built around over 100 forgeable swords, each carrying its own Secret Arts. Marvelous describes a skill system where players assign up to three mastered skills for both ground and aerial combat, letting characters mix single strikes, wide-area attacks and long-range Secret Arts rather than relying on one fixed moveset. A spirit gauge governs weapon-switching between a character’s two equipped blades, and PlayStation’s own material confirms seamless movement between ground and air combos.
For players who want the unmodified original, the release also includes a way to play through Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Genroku Legends largely as they originally shipped, with enhanced graphics rather than the reworked modern systems — outlets have described this bundled option under slightly different names, so Red Reactions isn’t treating any single label as the confirmed official term until Marvelous standardizes it.
English voiceover, for the first time
Revenant Blades adds all-new English voice acting across its full cast — something neither the Wii nor Vita versions had. Marvelous pairs that with “all-new English localization,” suggesting more than just a new audio track; expect revised script and text alongside the voice work.

Platforms and the Switch 2 edition
Revenant Blades releases day-and-date on PS5, Switch 2, Switch and PC via Steam — notably Vanillaware’s first PC release since 2006’s Fantasy Earth Zero. On Switch 2 specifically, the physical release is confirmed to ship as a full game on the cartridge, not a game-key card requiring a download.

Editions and pricing
The standard edition is digital-or-physical at $49.99 on PS5 and Switch, and $59.99 on Switch 2. The limited edition runs $89.99 on PS5/Switch and $99.99 on Switch 2, and includes a 120-plus-page Vanillaware artbook, a Basiscape soundtrack CD, and a decorative tabletop byōbu folding screen, packaged in box art featuring Kisuke and Momohime.
What’s not confirmed
Marvelous and PlayStation’s announcements don’t mention a frame rate target, HDR support, ray tracing, or any performance-mode options for the console versions. There’s also no confirmed save-transfer, cross-save or cross-buy support between platforms, and no DLC has been announced beyond what’s already bundled into the base release. Treat any of those as unconfirmed until Vanillaware or Marvelous says otherwise.
