Alan Ritchson Will Star in Helldivers Movie as Sony Moves Release to June 2028
Alan Ritchson is now set to star in Sony's Helldivers movie, directed by Justin Lin. The U.S. theatrical release has moved from November 2027 to June 9, 2028.

Alan Ritchson is now set to star in Sony and PlayStation Productions’ Helldivers movie, and its U.S. theatrical date has moved to June 9, 2028 from November 10, 2027. The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap both identify Ritchson and director Justin Lin in their September 30 coverage of Sony’s schedule changes. Neither report gives Ritchson’s character a name.
What changed since the earlier casting report?
On September 18, Deadline reported that Ritchson was in talks, while Sony declined to comment. The newer Sony calendar coverage has moved beyond that stage: The Hollywood Reporter says Lin’s film will star Ritchson, following Jason Momoa’s departure. The distinction matters because the earlier negotiation is no longer the current casting status.
Hutch Parker is producing alongside PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Lin, through Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment. Plot details remain undisclosed. Variety also reports Sony’s move from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028. That is the reported U.S. theatrical date; international release dates may differ.
What role will Ritchson play?
The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as following an elite unit of soldiers fighting alien creatures. Ritchson is attached to star, but Sony has not disclosed a character name or how the film will distribute its focus among the Helldivers. The casting update does not establish a full ensemble, a filming date or a detailed synopsis.
What Helldivers actually is
Helldivers is Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative twin-stick shooter, which debuted in 2015. Its sequel, Helldivers 2, launched on PS5 and PC in 2024 and sold more than 12 million units in its first four months — later expanding to Xbox, where Deadline notes it continues to perform well. The games put players in the boots of the Helldivers, an elite unit tasked with defending the fictional Super Earth and spreading “Managed Democracy” against alien threats, using an arsenal of exaggerated, over-the-top weaponry.
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions previously collaborated on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, giving the studio prior experience translating a PlayStation-published game to film.
What’s still unknown
Beyond Ritchson’s involvement, Lin’s direction and the June 9, 2028 U.S. theatrical date, Sony has not detailed the supporting cast, character identities, production schedule or how closely the film will follow either game’s story. The move into 2028 does not, by itself, establish why Sony changed the date.
