Hunter x Hunter Chapter 421 Has No Release Date Yet — But Togashi Has Already Finished Manuscripts Through Chapter 427
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 420 has published, and Weekly Shonen Jump says Chapter 421's date will be announced once decided. Here's what that means, and how far ahead Yoshihiro Togashi has actually written.

Hunter x Hunter Chapter 420 has published, and Chapter 421 does not have a release date. Weekly Shonen Jump’s own notice says the next publication date will be announced in the magazine once it has been decided — the same wording it’s used at the end of previous runs. That’s not the same as cancellation, and it’s not the same as a confirmed return window either. Separately, Yoshihiro Togashi has kept working: he reported on September 1 that his manuscript for Chapter 427 was finished.

How This Run Played Out
Hunter x Hunter returned on June 29, 2026, with Chapter 411 in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 31, after a break of roughly 18 months. That return coincided with Shueisha announcing the series had passed 100 million copies in worldwide circulation, including digital editions, and with Volume 39’s release on July 3 — both June milestones, not new news tied to this week’s chapter. From there, Chapters 412 through 420 followed weekly without interruption, closing out a 10-chapter run. Chapter 420 is the batch’s final installment, and Shueisha’s after-chapter notice is the same kind of statement that closed the previous run: the next date will be published in Weekly Shonen Jump once one exists.
Manuscript Complete Doesn’t Mean a Date Is Set
The detail worth understanding clearly is the gap between what Togashi has finished writing and what Shueisha has scheduled. Togashi has continued posting progress updates on his own X account throughout the year, and on September 1 he wrote “No.427、原稿完成” — Chapter 427’s manuscript is complete. Combined with earlier posts, that means finished manuscripts already exist for chapters beyond the ones published so far.
That’s real, verifiable progress, but a finished manuscript isn’t a scheduled magazine slot. Weekly Shonen Jump still has to fit new Hunter x Hunter chapters into its actual weekly lineup, and Shueisha has consistently held off announcing a return date until it’s locked in rather than committing early and risking another delay. So while Togashi being multiple chapters ahead is a genuinely good sign for whenever the series does come back, it isn’t the same thing as Chapter 421 having a publication date — and nothing currently states one.
What “Hiatus” Does and Doesn’t Mean Here
It’s fair to describe Hunter x Hunter as entering another hiatus after Chapter 420 — that’s a reasonable shorthand for what’s happening. But Shueisha itself hasn’t used stronger language than “the next date will be announced once decided.” It hasn’t said the break will last a set number of weeks or months, and it hasn’t said anything resembling cancellation. Readers have seen this pattern before: a run of new chapters, a pause with no attached date, and then an announcement whenever Weekly Shonen Jump actually has one to make.
For now, that’s the complete picture: Chapter 420 is out, Chapter 421 has no date, and Togashi’s manuscript work is running ahead of what’s been published.
