Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising crossed ¥1 billion at the Japanese box office after only four days, reaching ¥1,018,375,620 from 583,638 admissions between its August 28 release and August 31. If you’re new to the franchise or need a refresher before the sequel, our Madoka Magica watch order guide covers where Walpurgisnacht Rising fits. The film has kept adding business since: over its first 10 days, through September 6, it reached ¥1,537,959,580 from 904,721 admissions. For comparison, 2013’s Rebellion needed 13 days to hit ¥1 billion in the first place.

The four-day number, and the weekend number it isn’t

It’s worth keeping two separate figures straight here, since they cover different windows. Over its actual three-day opening weekend — Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30 — Walpurgisnacht Rising took in ¥939,647,100 from 534,772 admissions, ranking No. 1 in Japan. The ¥1,018,375,620 / 583,638-admission figure is the four-day cumulative total through Monday, August 31, and it’s the number tied to the ¥1 billion milestone. The two shouldn’t be conflated: the film crossed ¥1 billion on its fourth day, not over the weekend itself.

Considerably faster than Rebellion — but not bigger yet

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion, the franchise’s previous theatrical film, opened in Japanese theaters on October 26, 2013, and needed 13 days to cross ¥1 billion. Walpurgisnacht Rising did it in four, and by its own 10-day mark had added roughly ¥520 million and more than 320,000 further admissions on top of that four-day total. That’s a real, verifiable difference in early pace and a sign the opening didn’t immediately collapse after its first weekend — not a claim that the new film has out-earned its predecessor.

Rebellion kept selling tickets well past its opening and ultimately finished with a total gross over ¥2 billion in Japan, reportedly the first late-night-anime theatrical release to cross that line. Walpurgisnacht Rising, at roughly ¥1.53 billion through 10 days, hasn’t approached that lifetime total yet, and this isn’t the highest-grossing Madoka Magica film to date — the story so far is about sustained pace, not a final result. And it’s worth being clear about what these figures actually measure: box-office gross, ticket revenue before theater splits, marketing spend, and production costs are all factored out. They say nothing about how much the film earned Aniplex or SHAFT.

Thirteen years of pent-up demand

Walpurgisnacht Rising is the franchise’s first new mainline theatrical continuation since Rebellion — roughly 13 years, following directly from where that film left off. The original creative team returned for it, including Akiyuki Shinbo, Gen Urobuchi and SHAFT, which likely helps explain why the opening had this much built-up demand behind it in the first place.

Where things stand internationally

No official international theatrical or streaming release date has been confirmed for Walpurgisnacht Rising outside Japan, and this second checkpoint hasn’t changed that.
