Street Fighter Turns Its New Movie Trailer Into an Actual Playable Fighting Game on YouTube
Paramount and Legendary's new Street Fighter trailer puts Ryu and Ken's rivalry in focus — and it now also exists as a playable YouTube Playables arcade experience called the Combo Challenge, ahead of the October 16, 2026 release.

Paramount and Legendary have released a new trailer for Street Fighter, giving a much clearer look at Ryu and Ken’s conflict, the World Warrior Tournament and the movie’s game-accurate special moves ahead of the October 16 theatrical release. The footage also includes a shot of Ryu’s eyes glowing during a fight with Ken — a moment that evokes his game counterpart’s darker side without the film actually naming it.
The trailer isn’t only something to watch, either. Paramount and Legendary have also put it inside a playable YouTube experience called the Street Fighter Combo Challenge, which they describe as the first full-length movie trailer made playable through YouTube Playables.
You can actually play this trailer
The Combo Challenge drops the same trailer footage into a virtual arcade cabinet, complete with a CRT-style filter and a surrounding arcade room decorated with movie posters. While the footage plays behind it, timed directional and button prompts appear on screen, mapped to recognizable Street Fighter inputs like the hadouken motion — hit them accurately and the on-screen fighter lands a “Perfect,” miss them and the fighter takes damage instead. It’s closer to a rhythm-timing challenge synced to the trailer than a full fighting-game engine, but it’s built specifically around inputs longtime Street Fighter players will recognize by muscle memory, which is exactly the point.
Paramount and Legendary describe the Combo Challenge as the first full-length movie trailer turned playable through YouTube Playables — that’s the studios’ own framing of the claim, not an independently verified industry first, so it’s worth treating as marketing language rather than settled history. The experience works through the YouTube app and in browser, and it’s tied to the same World Warrior Tour campaign the studios kicked off in Tokyo on September 1. Landing combos in the Combo Challenge doesn’t reveal anything about the actual film’s story — it’s a marketing layer on top of the trailer, not new footage or plot information.

Ryu and Ken take center stage
Paramount’s official synopsis describes Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) as “estranged street fighters” who get “thrown back into combat” when Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. The new trailer leans into that estrangement directly: it shows Chun-Li trying to convince Ryu that Ken is in trouble and needs his help, using that as the hook to pull him back into fighting at all. The two are shown facing off against each other during the footage, though nothing in the trailer establishes who wins that exchange or resolves their falling-out — just that whatever came between them is serious enough that Ryu walked away from fighting altogether.
Is the trailer teasing a darker Ryu?
The trailer includes a shot of Ryu’s eyes glowing during his fight with Ken. It’s the kind of visual that long-time players will immediately connect to Ryu’s game arcs around the Satsui no Hado — the “Surge of Murderous Intent” that pushes him toward rage, and the basis for the alternate, more villainous version of the character sometimes called Evil Ryu.
That said, neither Paramount’s official materials nor the trailer itself names the moment as Evil Ryu. It’s press and fan shorthand for what the shot appears to evoke, not a confirmed plot point. Treat it as a tease of Ryu wrestling with something darker in himself rather than a confirmed transformation or storyline.
The movie is leaning into the games’ actual moves
One of the clearer takeaways from this trailer is how openly the film recreates recognizable Street Fighter techniques rather than keeping every fight grounded in generic martial arts. A bathhouse sequence features E. Honda’s Hundred Hand Slap. Ryu is shown using his spinning Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, and Akuma’s fight with Joe incorporates the Satsui no Hadou. It’s a clear signal that the production wants these fights to feel like the games translated to live action, not just inspired by them.
Chun-Li and the tournament behind it all
Chun-Li’s role is to bring Ryu and Ken into the World Warrior Tournament, which Paramount’s synopsis describes as hiding “a deadly conspiracy” beneath its competition. The trailer doesn’t spell out the details of that conspiracy, and nothing here confirms brackets, eliminations, or who ultimately wins any individual match. What’s clear is that the tournament is the movie’s central stage, and that its stakes extend well past who’s the better fighter.

New looks at the wider roster
The trailer also gives fresh glimpses of the ensemble beyond the core trio. Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoai’s Akuma factors into the Satsui no Hadou sequence mentioned above. David Dastmalchian’s M. Bison appears in his officer-style uniform, presiding over the tournament’s more sinister side, though the footage doesn’t spell out his full plan or confirm him as the story’s final threat. Cody Rhodes’ Guile and Orville Peck’s Vega both show up in the tournament footage as well, and Jason Momoa’s Blanka gets another look — his appearance and ferocity are on display, though nothing in the trailer explains his backstory or which game continuity, if any, the film is drawing from for his character.

When and where
Paramount and Legendary launched the new trailer alongside the kickoff of the film’s global “World Warrior Tour” promotional campaign, with an event in Tokyo on September 1. Street Fighter is directed by Kitao Sakurai, set in 1993, and opens in US theaters October 16, 2026.
