Netflix’s full The Diplomat Season 4 trailer names the crisis behind its marital conflict: President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler are plotting to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon. Kate Wyler and Todd Penn become an uneasy opposition to that alliance. The season begins streaming October 15, 2026.

Who Holds Power, and Who Is Working Together?

Netflix’s trailer article distinguishes the characters’ offices from their personal relationships. That explains why the alliance is more complicated than Kate opposing an anonymous administration.

CharacterPublic roleSeason 4 alignment described by Netflix
Grace Penn — Allison JanneyUS presidentWorks with Hal on the weapon conspiracy
Hal Wyler — Rufus SewellVice president; Kate’s husbandAllies with Grace
Kate Wyler — Keri RussellUS ambassador to the UKTries to stop the scheme with Todd
Todd Penn — Bradley WhitfordFirst Gentleman; Grace’s husbandBecomes Kate’s unlikely partner
Billie Appiah — Nana MensahWhite House chief of staffChallenges Kate’s objection to the administration’s actions

The partnerships cut across two marriages. In the season overview, creator Debora Cahn describes the growing Grace–Hal bond as producing an unstable Kate–Todd alliance. Private loyalties and public responsibilities pull against each other within the same four-person conflict.

A Dispute About Presidential Limits

Netflix’s written account describes Kate objecting to a covert military incursion into an ally’s territory. Billie responds that the boundary can move. The disagreement concerns who decides how far the administration can go, rather than simply whether Kate understands the plan.

That escalates the marital conflict into a dispute about state power. It does not identify the weapon’s technical nature, establish the operation’s complete chronology, or reveal whether Kate and Todd can prevent it. The official synopsis uses a broad description of Russia’s most powerful weapon; more specific identifications require their own evidence.

Before October 15

The season continues the US–UK crisis and the characters’ established political positions. Netflix points viewers to Season 3’s ending recap and the three currently streaming seasons. Readers preserving that ending can use the role table above without treating promotional clips as a complete catch-up.

Correction, October 1: This guide no longer states that Season 4 contains eight episodes released simultaneously. The eight-episode statement on the checked Netflix pages refers to Season 3; Season 4’s October 15 start is confirmed. Extended synopsis quotations have also been replaced with the role and alliance guide.
