TYSON Documentary Sets October 13 Netflix Premiere — Four-Part Series Confronts Mike Tyson's Rise and Controversies
Netflix's TYSON documentary series premieres October 13, now expanded from three parts to four. Here's what the series covers, what the trailer shows, and how it differs from Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson.

Netflix released the official trailer for TYSON on September 17, confirming an October 13 premiere for its documentary series on the boxer’s life — and confirming a real change from the project’s original pitch: what was announced in December 2024 as a three-part series is now a four-part one, with four hour-long episodes rather than three.
From Three Parts to Four
That expansion is genuine information gain, not a rounding error in marketing copy. Netflix’s own Tudum article, published the same day as the trailer, confirms the series “unfolds across four hour-long episodes” — up from the three-part structure first described when the project was announced nearly two years ago. Netflix hasn’t explained what prompted the extra hour of material.
What the Series Actually Covers
According to Netflix’s official synopsis, TYSON traces its subject’s life from “a chaotic upbringing in Brooklyn, New York” through his “meteoric rise to global superstardom,” and into the “fame, influence, and controversy” that followed. The series notes Tyson won the heavyweight title at age 20 and reigned as undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, before returning to the ring at 58 in 2024 to face Jake Paul in what Netflix describes as the most-streamed live sporting event of all time. Netflix’s own copy also acknowledges the harder chapters directly, citing “incarceration, financial strain, substance abuse, and in-ring controversies” as part of what the series examines — marketing language worth noting as Netflix’s framing, not an independent claim of balance or completeness.
The Record, Stated Precisely
Independent of Netflix’s own marketing language, the historical record here is well-documented: Tyson was convicted of rape in February 1992, following a trial involving Desiree Washington, and served roughly three years in prison before his 1995 release. Separately, in 1997, his rematch against Evander Holyfield ended when Tyson bit part of Holyfield’s ear during the fight. Netflix’s trailer and Tudum copy don’t spell out either incident in that level of detail, keeping the marketing framing broader (“controversies,” “in-ring controversies”) — the specifics above come from the documented public record rather than from Netflix’s own promotional text.
What the Trailer Shows
The trailer leans on Tyson speaking directly to camera about facing his own history rather than avoiding it. Netflix’s Tudum piece quotes him saying he believes people have to “face the man in the mirror — taking the good with the bad — to give a full account of our contributions in this life,” and separately that revisiting his story “through the reflective lens of my growth and maturity” will be a demanding process. The trailer’s own tone leans into Tyson describing how his public persona hardened over time, without Netflix walking that framing back or softening it elsewhere in official copy.
Floyd Russ and the Creative Team
Floyd Russ directs, following prior credits on Netflix’s Untold franchise and American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing. Jenna Millman, Jacob Miller, and Alexa Ginsburg produce, with Jim Gray, Ian Orefice, Amanda Spain, Jonna McLaughlin, Greg C. Lake, Michael Hughes, Douglas Banker, Russ himself, and Bill Simmons serving as executive producers.
Not the Same as Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson
Netflix already has one Tyson-adjacent title in its library: Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson, a three-part 2024 series that followed the build-up and training camps ahead of Tyson’s live fight against Jake Paul. That series was fight-specific and time-boxed to one event. TYSON is a different kind of project — a career-spanning biographical documentary covering decades rather than a single fight’s lead-up, built around new interviews rather than training-camp access.
A Separate Comedy Special, Also Coming
Netflix has also confirmed Mike Tyson: Return of the Mike, a one-man stage special filmed at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, premiering November 3 — three weeks after the documentary. That’s a distinct title, not part of TYSON’s four episodes; Netflix describes it as Tyson turning toward comedy rather than the documentary’s more reflective tone, and it marks his first one-man show since 2013’s Undisputed Truth.
What Remains Unknown
Netflix hasn’t detailed which specific interview subjects beyond Tyson himself appear in the four episodes, nor has it published an episode-by-episode breakdown of which period of his life each installment covers. Nothing here should be read as confirming the series takes a fully balanced or exhaustive approach — it’s Tyson’s story told with his direct participation, which shapes what does and doesn’t make the final cut.
