Robert Eggers' Werwulf Has a New Trailer — What It Reveals Before Christmas
A new Werwulf trailer puts Robert Eggers' medieval werewolf story back in focus. Here's what is confirmed about the cast, the premise, and the separate US and UK release dates.

Robert Eggers’ Werwulf has new trailer footage ahead of its Christmas release. The confirmed shape of the film is a medieval horror story with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe, but neither the footage nor Focus Features’ short official description supplies a complete plot. Focus lists December 25, 2026 for US theaters; Focus Features UK lists January 1, 2027 for UK cinemas.
The September trailer follows a first official trailer released in June. It is another look at the film, not its first public footage. Watch the current official trailer on Focus Features’ site.
What Does the New Werwulf Trailer Reveal?
The marketing brings the threat of a wolf hunt and Taylor-Johnson’s physical ordeal into sharper view. The official artwork supplied by Focus places an armed figure in a wooded landscape; the trailer’s images and editing build tension around the creature rather than spelling out a full sequence of events. A shot that suggests danger does not establish who caused the affliction, when a transformation happens, or who survives it.
Focus itself describes Werwulf in broad terms as a story about devotion, damnation and the threat within. Its film page identifies the three principal cast members but does not name their characters. Esquire’s interview and trailer coverage identifies Taylor-Johnson’s character as a man facing a lycanthropic curse, Depp as his wife, and Dafoe as a hunter. Those role details come from reporting, rather than the short cast list on Focus’ page.
Why Is It Set in Medieval England?
Eggers has discussed setting the story in England around 1300 and drawing on older wolf folklore. That historical frame helps explain why the campaign emphasizes fear, religious imagery and a countryside hunt. It does not make Werwulf a reconstruction of one documented incident or establish the film’s supernatural rules. The director told Esquire that viewers should not assume the familiar conventions of later werewolf movies apply here.
The film is written by Eggers and Sjón, according to Focus Features. Eggers directs. Focus has not published a detailed scene-by-scene synopsis, a running time or a rating on its current film page.
Does the Trailer Fully Reveal the Creature?
The campaign teases bodily transformation and the danger attached to it. It does not provide enough context to treat any single image as a definitive explanation of the creature’s final form or the cause of Taylor-Johnson’s condition. Claims about a bite, silver bullets or a particular character being responsible would go beyond what Focus currently confirms.
When Does Werwulf Release?
Focus Features lists December 25, 2026 for its US theatrical release. Its UK site lists January 1, 2027 for cinemas there. These are separate regional dates, not a worldwide Christmas Day opening. Our Release Calendar tracks the confirmed US theatrical date.
