What to Watch Before Black Clover Season 2 — Where the Anime Stopped, Whether the Movie Matters and What You Need to Remember

Black Clover Season 2 continues the original story rather than rebooting it. Here's exactly where the anime left off, whether Sword of the Wizard King matters, and the smallest catch-up route before October 3.

This guide covers spoilers for the original Black Clover anime’s 2021 finale, including the arc it stopped in and the fight that closed it out. Nothing from the manga’s later chapters is discussed. For the confirmed Season 2 premiere date, cast and streaming details, see our Black Clover Season 2 news guide.

Correction (September 29, 2026): An earlier version incorrectly named Julius Novachrono as a Dark Triad captive, placed the original anime amid an already-running Spade Kingdom raid, and said Asta had mastered full Devil Union by episode 170. The captives are Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance; the finale ends with Asta and Liebe’s equal contract while the larger counterattack and Devil Union mastery are still ahead.

The Short Answer

You don’t need to rewatch all 170 episodes. But Season 2 is a direct continuation of the same story, not a soft reboot — Studio Pierrot and director Ayataka Tanemura are picking the story back up as the Magic Knights prepare to counterattack the Spade Kingdom, with the same cast of characters and unresolved conflict. If you remember roughly where things stood, you’re in good shape. If you don’t, the fastest fix is below.

Where the Original Anime Actually Stopped

Black Clover’s original TV run ended at episode 170, “Faraway Future,” on March 30, 2021, just before the Clover Kingdom’s full counterattack against the Spade Kingdom begins. The Dark Triad had captured Magic Knight captains Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance, and their allies were preparing a rescue. Crunchyroll’s episode 168 synopsis names both captains as the rescue targets.

In the finale, Asta defeats Liebe in Nacht Faust’s Devil-Binding Ritual but chooses an equal contract rather than forcing him into submission. That is the beginning of their partnership, not mastery of full Devil Union. The official Season 2 opening synopsis says Asta and Liebe are still training to acquire that power, while Yuno trains to face Zenon again and rescue Vangeance. The larger assault is about to begin when the new season opens.

The Fastest Catch-Up Route for Returning Viewers

You don’t need episode 1. The useful stretch is the original anime’s final Spade Kingdom episodes, which establish the Dark Triad’s attacks, the captives and the counterattack preparations. Black Clover’s official channels have also put out real catch-up tools rather than leaving it to fan wikis: TV Tokyo’s anime channel released a two-part “1st Season” recap video series ahead of the new season, and the franchise’s official YouTube presence has posted full-episode binge blocks covering the later arcs, including a dedicated upload spanning episodes 66 through 84. TV Tokyo also aired a two-part “1st Season Digest” clip special in the weeks before the premiere, with the second half airing September 15. Any of those get you current on tone and stakes far faster than a full rewatch.

Can a New Viewer Start With Season 2?

Not really, and Black Clover’s own promotion doesn’t suggest otherwise. This is a continuation of an ongoing story with established relationships, ranks and power systems, not a jumping-on point built for newcomers. If you’re starting fresh, the realistic route is watching enough of the original series to know who the Black Bulls are, what a grimoire and Magic Knight squad are, and how Asta’s Anti-Magic works — you don’t have to finish all 170 episodes first, but arriving with zero context will make Season 2’s first episodes harder to follow than they need to be.

Do You Need to Watch Sword of the Wizard King?

No — and this one has an official answer, not just a general recommendation. Netflix’s own Tudum coverage of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King (2023) describes it plainly as a standalone story: an original plot not adapted from the manga, supervised by creator Yuki Tabata, set after the anime’s fourth season but explicitly not guaranteed to factor into later seasons. It’s good additional Black Clover material if you want more of the world and characters, but it isn’t connective tissue you need before Season 2.

The Five Things Worth Remembering

  • Asta’s Anti-Magic comes from Liebe, a devil sealed inside his grimoire. In the finale, Asta learns Liebe’s identity, defeats him in the Devil-Binding Ritual and chooses an equal contract. They have not yet mastered full Devil Union.
  • Nacht Faust, a Black Bulls vice-captain, guides Asta through the ritual and begins training him and Liebe to master Devil Union. He’s a recent, important addition to the cast, not a background character.
  • Yuno has grown into a major power in his own right, promoted within the Golden Dawn squad and fighting with Spirit Dive, his fused form with the wind spirit Sylph. He also has a personal stake in the Spade Kingdom specifically: he’s the last survivor of House Grinberryall, that kingdom’s deposed royal family.
  • Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance are captured by the Dark Triad. Rescuing the two Magic Knight captains is an immediate goal of the coming counterattack.
  • The Dark Triad has attacked the other kingdoms, but the Clover Kingdom’s full counterattack has not yet begun. Season 2 opens as that battle gets underway.

Where the Manga Fits — Without Spoilers

Yuki Tabata’s manga wrapped up in May 2026, closing the story the anime is still catching up to. That’s worth knowing only as context: it means the source material is finished and Season 2 has a confirmed ending to eventually build toward, not that Season 2 itself will get there, or that you need to have read a single chapter. Black Clover’s own announcements haven’t said how much of the manga this season covers, so treat the ending as something Season 2 hasn’t promised to reach yet.

Where to Watch

Season 2 premieres October 3 in Japan. Crunchyroll’s subtitled release is now confirmed for October 3 at 8:00 a.m. PT, equivalent to 15:00 UTC, in its announced territories. For the full current breakdown of dates, cast and streaming platforms, see our Season 2 release guide. Sgt. Frog’s new TV series also premieres the same day, if you’re tracking more than one October 3 return.

Your Best Route Before October 3

If you’re a returning viewer with the broad strokes still intact, you need nothing further — maybe one of the official recap videos if you want a refresher. If your memory of the final Spade Kingdom episodes has faded, watch that stretch or an official recap. If you’re new to the franchise entirely, budget real time with the original series rather than expecting Season 2 to onboard you from zero. And if you’re wondering about the movie, it’s a fun optional detour — not homework.
