The Runner Is Now on Prime Video — What Gal Gadot's 84-Minute Thriller Is About
The Runner is streaming now on Prime Video. Here's what Gal Gadot's tightly-paced London thriller is actually about, who's in it, and what Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed about the story.

The Runner is streaming now on Prime Video, and it puts Gal Gadot in an unusually stripped-down role: no cape, no sword, just a phone, a pair of running shoes, and roughly 84 minutes to save her son. The Amazon MGM Studios original went up worldwide on September 2, 2026.
What Is The Runner About?
Per Amazon MGM’s own synopsis, Gadot plays Maia Marten, “a sharp, resourceful, high-powered lawyer at the top of London’s legal world.” During her routine morning run, a phone call changes everything: her son has been taken, and the instructions to get him back are simple and merciless — keep moving, follow every command, tell no one. Stop, and he dies. Forced to sprint through the city obeying a string of increasingly ruthless demands, Maia has to figure out how far she’s actually willing to go.
That’s the extent of what Amazon has revealed about the plot, and it’s deliberately as far as this piece goes — who’s actually behind the call and how the ordeal resolves isn’t something the studio’s own synopsis gives away, and it’s not something worth spoiling here either.
Who Gal Gadot Plays
Maia Marten is a departure from the roles Gadot has been best known for. This is one of her first major lead projects since stepping back from Wonder Woman, and there’s no armor or mythology doing any of the work here — the character’s only tools are her legal instincts and her physical stamina, both pushed to their limit in real time. Gadot has recently said she hasn’t had specific conversations with DC Studios about returning to play Wonder Woman, which makes a project like this a useful data point for where she’s putting her energy in the meantime.
Damian Lewis Is the Voice Controlling the Chase
Damian Lewis plays The Caller, the unseen presence on the other end of Maia’s phone directing her through the city. Amazon’s credits list him alongside Gadot as the film’s second billed lead, and the setup keeps him largely a voice and a threat rather than a visible antagonist for most of the runtime — the tension comes from what he tells Maia to do next, not from watching him do anything himself.
Why London and the Short Runtime Matter
Amazon describes the film as set “against the backdrop of London’s hyper-connected streets,” and the city functions as more than scenery — Maia’s route through it, and her inability to stop moving through it, is the entire mechanism of the plot. Director Kevin Macdonald has spoken about how much of the filmmaking challenge came from that constraint specifically: “How do you get nuanced emotion while somebody is running, and how do you get the dialogue to work while they’re running?” he said. “It’s one of those things where it’s all very well in the script, but as soon as you get on the ground, you’re problem-solving all the time.”
At 84 minutes, The Runner is notably tight for a studio thriller. Amazon’s own marketing leans into that compression with the tagline “One hour. One chance to save her son” — that’s a marketing hook, not a literal claim that the film unfolds in real time, since neither Macdonald nor Amazon has described the structure that specifically. What is clear is that the short runtime is a deliberate choice matching the premise: a mother who can’t stop moving doesn’t get a movie that stops to breathe either.
Cast and Creative Team
Alongside Gadot and Lewis, the confirmed main cast includes Rory Wilmot as Maia’s son Noah and Alfred Enoch as Ted. Kevin Macdonald directs from a screenplay by Mark Gibson, with David Kosse producing. Filming took place in London.
Early critical reaction has leaned negative — reviews out of the film’s release have generally been unfavorable, focused mainly on the thinness of the plot mechanics stretched across the premise. None of that changes what the film actually is or where to find it; it’s a factor worth knowing going in, not a verdict this piece is making.
