Trails from Zero & Trails to Azure Beginner Guide — Where the Crossbell Arc Fits and Which Game to Play First
Play Trails from Zero first, then Trails to Azure. Here's how the Crossbell arc fits into the wider Trails series, what the 2026 PS5 and Switch 2 releases actually improve, and whether you need to play Trails in the Sky first.

Play Trails from Zero first, then Trails to Azure. That’s the direct answer if you’re trying to figure out where to start with the Crossbell arc of Nihon Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails series — and with both games now out on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2, this is a genuinely good time to start.

Zero and Azure Are the Crossbell Arc
Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure follow Lloyd Bannings and the newly formed Special Support Section, a ragtag police unit working the streets of Crossbell — a small, autonomous city-state caught between two much larger nations. Together, the two games make up what fans call the Crossbell arc: a complete, self-contained story across two entries, the same structural shape as the Trails in the Sky trilogy or the Trails of Cold Steel tetralogy elsewhere in the series.
Azure picks up directly where Zero ends, and Nihon Falcom built real continuity between them: importing your Trails from Zero save data into Trails to Azure changes the story experience rather than just carrying over cosmetic bonuses.
Do You Need to Play Trails in the Sky First?
No — not to follow Zero and Azure’s own story. Crossbell is a new setting with its own cast, and the games are written to stand on their own. What earlier Sky knowledge actually buys you is context: recurring characters, place names, and political background that Zero and Azure reference but don’t require you to already know. If you’ve got the time, playing Sky first deepens the experience. If you don’t, starting cold with Zero works, and you won’t be lost.
Don’t take that as blanket gatekeeping in the other direction, either — you don’t need to have played every prior Trails game to enjoy Crossbell. It’s a legitimate entry point into the wider series precisely because it was designed to be self-contained.
How Crossbell Relates to Trails of Cold Steel
Here’s where it’s worth being careful and spoiler-safe: Zero and Azure run roughly concurrently with Trails of Cold Steel and Trails of Cold Steel II, and a handful of familiar faces from the Cold Steel cast appear in Azure. That overlap is the main reason some longtime fans debate play order — playing Crossbell after both Cold Steel games avoids spoiling Cold Steel’s own reveals, since Zero and Azure reference events Cold Steel hasn’t happened yet for a newcomer. But if you’re coming to the series through Crossbell first, that’s a perfectly fine way in too — you’ll pick up on fewer references to Cold Steel specifically, without anything in Zero or Azure being spoiled for you in return.
What the 2026 Re-Releases Actually Improve
The September 10, 2026 PS5 and Switch 2 versions aren’t a ground-up remake — they’re enhanced ports, built on the same foundation as prior modern re-releases of the games. Confirmed upgrades include up to 4K resolution and up to 120 FPS, with the option to switch between original and upscaled textures. The Switch 2 version specifically adds mouse input support, a first for the games on Nintendo hardware.
Physically, both games are sold as a combined Deluxe Edition ($69.99) including a digital soundtrack and collector’s card set, or separately as digital editions ($39.99 each). A Limited Edition ($109.99), available through NIS America’s own store, adds a selected soundtrack, holographic card set, acrylic stand, art book, iron-on insignias and a coaster set. Nintendo Switch 2’s physical release ships as a Game-Key Card rather than a cartridge holding the full game data.
Bottom Line
If the question is simply “can I start Trails with Trails from Zero,” the answer is yes. Play Zero, then Azure, treat Sky as valuable optional context rather than required homework, and know that a few Cold Steel faces will show up in Azure without anything being spoiled the other way. The 2026 PS5 and Switch 2 releases are the most technically polished way to experience Crossbell yet, whether it’s your first stop in the series or your way back in.
