Silent Hill: Townfall: Do You Need to Have Played Silent Hill Before This?
Silent Hill: Townfall launches September 24 as a standalone, first-person entry. Here's what the story actually is, who Simon and Zoe are, and what newcomers need to know before playing.

No. Konami and developer Screen Burn have built Silent Hill: Townfall as what its own store listing calls a “full-length, self-contained psychological horror” — a new cast, a new setting, and a story writer/director Jon McKellan has described as “completely ours.” You don’t need to have finished the original Silent Hill, 2, or any other entry to follow what happens here.
What Townfall Actually Is
Townfall is set in 1996 on St. Amelia, a fictional Scottish island, and follows Simon Ordell (voiced by Jovan Adepo), who returns to the island after receiving cryptic messages through a strange handheld device. It’s the first full-length Silent Hill game told entirely in first person, including combat — a real structural departure from the series’ traditional third-person and over-the-shoulder camera work.
Who’s In It
Three named characters are confirmed so far. Simon Ordell is the sole playable protagonist. Terry O’Quinn voices Richard, described by Konami as the man who summons Simon back to St. Amelia and whose connection to the island’s past becomes harder to ignore as the story unfolds. Kezia Burrows voices Zoe, a nurse whose voice reaches Simon through static on his device. Konami hasn’t detailed how the three actually relate to each other beyond that setup, and nothing here should be read as more than what’s been shown.
The CRTV, Explained
The series’ iconic radio has a new form here: the CRTV, a portable television Simon carries throughout the game. According to Konami, it does three distinct jobs — it picks up unstable analog signals carrying story fragments and clues, it helps solve puzzles (Konami’s own example: powering a fuse box with a prepaid card, or cracking a code-secured safe), and it detects nearby threats by showing screen interference and outlining monster silhouettes through walls, which the game uses to support stealth routes around enemies rather than fighting them head-on.
That last point matters for expectations: PlayStation’s own hands-on report describes combat as actively discouraged, with hiding — closets, sheds, anything that breaks line of sight — treated as the more reliable survival option over confrontation.
Do You Need Any Silent Hill History?
Not for the story itself. Konami has been explicit that Townfall’s plot doesn’t require outside knowledge, and McKellan’s own description — a story that’s “completely ours” — points the same way. What’s worth knowing walking in isn’t lore, it’s tone: this is a slower, exploration-and-puzzle-driven horror game built around a first-person perspective the series hasn’t used before, closer in spirit to the psychological dread of the Silent Hill franchise’s reputation than to any specific returning character or location. If you’re new to the series, you’re not missing homework — you’re just meeting it on its own terms.
Platforms, Editions and What’s Actually Confirmed
Townfall launches September 24, 2026 on PS5, and on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The Standard Edition runs $49.99; the $59.99 Deluxe Edition adds a bonus in-game application and an alternate outfit for Simon. Pre-ordering either edition currently comes with two cosmetic CRTV skins. One more thing is officially confirmed: Konami’s own release-date announcements state that pre-ordering the Digital Deluxe Edition also includes 48 hours of early access ahead of the September 24 release — that’s on top of the two CRTV skins the Deluxe pre-order shares with the Standard Edition. Konami hasn’t published an exact unlock time for any region, so treat “48 hours early” as the confirmed detail rather than a specific clock time.
On PS5 specifically, Sony’s own reporting confirms DualSense haptic feedback during combat, gyroscope aiming for firearms, and gyroscope-driven CRTV tuning, along with 30 FPS Quality and 60 FPS Performance display modes and PS5 Pro support via PSSR upscaling and ray tracing.
What We Still Don’t Know
Konami hasn’t revealed how Simon, Richard and Zoe’s stories actually connect, hasn’t detailed the game’s ending structure beyond confirming multiple endings exist, and hasn’t said whether Townfall ties into any other Silent Hill game’s continuity. Treat all of that as open until Konami says otherwise — and treat this guide as scene-setting, not a review. That comes later, after actual hands-on time with the finished game.
